Fire alarm systems depend on a reliable communication path to transmit alarm, supervisory, and trouble signals to a central monitoring station. For many years, traditional copper telephone lines—commonly called POTS lines—were the standard method of providing that connection.
However, telephone and cellular networks have changed significantly. Traditional landlines are becoming more expensive and difficult to maintain, while older 3G cellular communicators may no longer operate on today’s wireless networks.

What Are POTS Lines?
POTS stands for “Plain Old Telephone Service.” These are traditional analog telephone lines that use copper wiring to carry voice calls and data.
Many older fire alarm panels were designed to use two dedicated POTS lines. When the fire alarm panel detects an emergency or system problem, it dials the central monitoring station and transmits the appropriate signal.
Although this technology was dependable for many years, telecommunications providers have increasingly transitioned away from copper infrastructure toward fiber, internet-based telephone service, and cellular networks.
Why Are Traditional Landlines Becoming a Problem?
Maintaining dedicated telephone lines for a fire alarm system can create several challenges.
Increasing monthly costs
Many properties pay for two telephone lines used only by the fire alarm panel. As traditional telephone service becomes less common, the monthly cost of maintaining those lines may continue to increase.
Aging infrastructure
Copper telephone networks require ongoing maintenance and are no longer the primary focus of many telecommunications providers. Service may become less dependable as equipment ages or providers discontinue support in certain areas.
Telephone service may not be truly analog

What Was the 3G Sunset?
The 3G sunset refers to cellular carriers shutting down their older third-generation wireless networks so that the spectrum could be reassigned to newer technologies such as 4G LTE and 5G.
The major U.S. carriers completed their principal 3G shutdowns during 2022. As a result, fire alarm communicators designed to operate only on 3G networks may no longer be capable of transmitting signals.
The shutdown did not only affect mobile phones. It also affected security systems, fire alarm communicators, medical alert devices, vehicle systems, and other equipment that relied on embedded 3G cellular technology.
Properties with an older cellular communicator should confirm which network technology the device uses. A communicator may look functional and show normal power while still being unable to connect to an active cellular network.
Why Upgrade to a Modern Cellular Fire Alarm Communicator?
A properly selected and installed cellular communicator provides a dedicated communication path between the fire alarm panel and the central monitoring station.
Reduced dependence on telephone lines

Newer communicators are designed for currently supported cellular networks. Depending on the manufacturer and service provider, equipment may use LTE, 5G-compatible technology, or a combination of cellular and internet communication paths.
Does “5G Communicator” Always Mean It Operates Directly on 5G?
The terminology can sometimes be confusing. Some products are advertised as 5G-ready or compatible with modern cellular infrastructure while primarily communicating through LTE networks.
The most important consideration is not simply whether the label says “5G.” The communicator should be:
- Listed for fire alarm use
- Compatible with the existing fire alarm control panel
- Supported by the cellular provider
- Compatible with the selected central monitoring station
- Installed in accordance with manufacturer requirements and applicable codes
- Expected to remain supported for a reasonable service life
A qualified fire alarm contractor can review the panel and determine which communication options are appropriate.
Signs Your Property May Need an Upgrade
Your fire alarm communication equipment should be evaluated when:
- The system still uses one or two dedicated telephone lines
- Telephone expenses have increased substantially
- The provider is converting copper lines to fiber or internet-based service
- The fire alarm panel frequently reports communication failures
- The cellular communicator was installed many years ago
- The communicator is labeled 2G, 3G, CDMA, or GSM
- No one can confirm which communication technology the system currently uses
